Travel information
- There are no international flights to Canberra: a stop elsewhere is required, typically Sydney.
- Canberra has flight connections to major cities in Australia:
Qantas and Virgin Blue fly at least once an hour to/from Sydney and Melbourne. There are flights to/from Brisbane and Adelaide at least twice a day.
- Canberra can be reached from Sydney
- by plane ($130 and up; 50 minute flight),
- by bus (about $40; from Sydney airport or the city center; about 3 1/4 hours) (Murray's, Greyhound Australia),
- by rental car ($45 to $100 plus gasoline about $40; 270 kilometers; 3 hours; from Sydney airport or the city center; relatively easy drive)
Total travel time from Sydney center to Canberra center is roughly the same by all three means of transportation. The plane option can be almost an hour faster only if you arrive at the airport very late, have only hand luggage, and get a cab from the airport to the center of Canberra.
- From Canberra Airport to the center it is often best to take a cab (about $20; 10 to 20 minutes). There is a less expensive shuttle bus ($9 one-way; $15 return) which runs every 30 minutes daytime on weekdays but far less frequently in the evening and on the weekend.
