A/Prof Thushara Abhayapala
BE (Hons 1) PhD
I am an Associate professor at the Department of Information Engineering, ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.
I received the B.E. (with honours 1) degree in interdisciplinary systems engineering in 1994, and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications engineering in 1999 from ANU. From 1995 to 1997, I worked as a Research Engineer at the Arthur C. Clarke Centre for Modern Technologies in Sri Lanka. Since December 1999, I have been a faculty member at ANU. I was the Leader of the Wireless Signal Processing (WSP) Program at National ICT Australia (NICTA) from November 2005 to July 2007. I have supervised 21 research students (19 PhDs and 2 Masters, some jointly) and coauthored approximately 125 peer-reviewed publications. Currently, I am an Associate Editor for EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking.
Research Interests
Physically inspired signal processing problems in the areas of Acoustic and Audio; Wireless and Mobile Communications; and Bio-medical applications. These include broadband/ nearfield beamforming, array signal processing, wireless channel modelling, sound propagation modelling, spatial soundfield recording and reconstruction, MIMO systems, space-time-frequency coding. Here are some of my projects with PhD students:
- HRTF modelling
- Spatial Sound Reproduction
- Propagation of EM waves on human body
- Chest Sound Localisation
- Time-varying channels
- Unified Space Time Frequency Coding
- Heart Rate Variability Analysis
Research Training (Postgraduate Supervision)
I have supervised (some jointly) 19 PhD students and 2 Masters by Research students. I take PhD student supervision seriously and I am proud of their achievements. I welcome students from Electrical Engineering and Bio-medical engineering background. I closely supervised my students in a demand driven way depending on the circumstances. Typically, in early stages, this may be as often as daily but I generally find that students become more independent towards the end.
